Intensive Outpatient Program

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a step down from inpatient treatment, offering a high level of care but without the requirement to stay at the facility full time. With this type of program, you can go about your usual daily routines. While intensive outpatient care is more flexible, we do recommend balancing your time in treatment with your daily responsibilities. Therefore, we also offer an Evening IOS program for mental health to accommodate those with inflexible daily schedules. The goal is to put your recovery first without having to pause your daily life.

Here at East Point Behavioral Health, our IOP programs in Massachusetts are intensive and treat moderate to severe mental health problems. However, unlike inpatient programs, fewer hours are involved. This allows you to receive a high level of specialized care as you begin your transition to everyday life. You will also learn coping skills to further support the adjustments you will be making.

Intensive outpatient program in Massachusetts incorporates both individual therapy and group therapy. You will spend about 9-15 hours a week in these sessions. Additionally, we offer online IOP mental health services for those who prefer remote care. We give each client plenty of time to work through their internal struggles, develop healthy coping skills, and learn how to manage their symptoms at home. Reach out to us today!

The goal of IOP programs in Massachusetts is to provide a high level of care that fits seamlessly into everyday life.

East Point Behavioral Health is one of the most trusted providers of IOP programs in Massachusetts. We have a simple but profound focus: Helping you to become a stronger, healthier individual with the tools and resources to succeed in recovery.

Living with mental health concerns can be physically and emotionally exhausting. But you do not have to continue this way. Support is available. Once you receive it, you can take back your life and overcome anxiety, depression, or any other mental health or substance use disorder you are experiencing.

We recommend our Intensive Outpatient Services to individuals who are:

  • Experiencing depression, anxiety, or other mood disorders.
  • Coping with trauma or post-traumatic stress disorder.
  • Dealing with relationship or family difficulties.
  • Managing substance use disorders alongside mental health challenges.
  • Needing ongoing care after being discharged from a residential or inpatient program.
  • Looking for support while maintaining work, school, or family responsibilities.

Mental health IOP is ideal for those who need more support than weekly therapy sessions but do not require 24-hour monitoring. If you or a loved one is feeling overwhelmed by mental health symptoms, but still able to live independently, an intensive outpatient program in Massachusetts may be the right solution.

What to Expect fromIOP Program in MA

One of the most important parts of treating individuals at our facility is that their individual needs are met. Not only is everyone unique, but also life experiences affect them differently. Two people can go through the same experience yet come out differently. For example, two children can grow up in the same abusive household, yet only one might struggle with depression and substance use.

Experiencing mental health symptoms does not make a person “weak.” Mental health disorders are complex conditions that involve inherited traits, environmental exposures, brain chemistry, family history, stressful life events, and adverse childhood experiences. This is why each person deserves a personalized approach to treatment.

When you start treatment at East Point Behavioral Health, you will be given a thorough evaluation to assess your symptoms, how they are impacting your life, and what your family and personal history look like. It’s important for our therapists and mental health professionals to understand your situation and the challenges you face. We will then create a personalized treatment plan that addresses your unique needs and provides you with a roadmap toward recovery.

At East Point Behavioral Health in Massachusetts, we understand that balancing treatment with daily responsibilities is essential. That’s why we offer flexible scheduling options for our IOP. This includes both morning and evening programs to accommodate your needs.

  • Morning Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): Our morning sessions run Monday through Friday from 9:00 AM to 12:30 PM, providing 9 hours of therapy per week. This schedule is ideal for individuals who prefer to engage in treatment during the day while maintaining their evening routines.
  • Evening Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): Recognizing that many have commitments during the day, our evening program is held Tuesday through Thursday from 5:30 PM to 8:30 PM. In other words, we offer 9 hours of therapy per week. This option lets you focus on your recovery without disrupting work, school, or family obligations.
  • Virtual Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP): For those who prefer remote care, we provide a virtual IOP Massachusetts program. This program offers the same level of support and flexibility. With online session, you can participate in solution focused therapy sessions from the comfort of your home.

Treatment Goals of Our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

The main goal of any mental health treatment program is to help those with mental health challenges get better. Whether you’re struggling with anxiety, depression, or another condition, it’s easy to feel hopeless or like nothing is ever going to get better. But with the right support, you can learn to improve your mental health, manage your symptoms, and lead a happy and productive life.

One way to accomplish this is by identifying specific targets. For example, past trauma, such as childhood abuse or neglect, can contribute to the development of mental health disorders. Once these specific targets are identified, we can help clients develop healthy and effective coping skills. This way, when reminders of past trauma resurface, individuals know how to deal with them so that they do not cause symptoms. It is a work in progress, and certainly not something that happens overnight, but it can be done over time with trauma IOP.

During your time in treatment, you will continue to meet with your assigned psychiatric provider, who will monitor your progress and analyze how well you are responding to treatment. Based on the findings, they can make any necessary adjustments to your treatment plan and medication management for mental health for more effective results.

Therapy Topics Covered in East Point Behavioral Health's IOP Program

When you join our IOP programs in Massachusetts, we will make every effort to ensure your treatment plan meets your unique requirements. After a comprehensive evaluation, our psychiatric providers will develop a roadmap for treatment, which may include topics such as:

Grief and Loss
Communication Skills
Relationships
Guilt and Shame
Healthy Boundaries

Our integrated treatment program also uses the Mental Health Intensive Outpatient Program (MH-IOP). This allows clients to share their insights and worries, along with listening to the perspectives of others. These experiences are useful in practicing productive, healthy interpersonal communication skills, as well as gaining a greater understanding of their mental health disorders, their response to triggers, and how to change these responses for the better.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the typical duration of our IOP programs in Massachusetts?

The duration of an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) typically ranges from 4 to 8 weeks, depending on the individual’s progress and treatment plan. Clients generally spend 9-15 hours per week in therapy, with flexibility to accommodate their daily life and responsibilities.

While both IOP and PHP offer structured treatment, the key difference lies in the intensity and duration. PHP usually requires more hours of treatment per week (often 20+ hours) and may involve more frequent visits, while IOP provides a more flexible schedule with fewer hours per week. PHP often involves a higher level of care, typically for individuals who need more intensive monitoring.

What sets East Point Behavioral Health apart is our ability to blend individualized care with real-life flexibility. Our IOP offers both morning and evening options, virtual care for out-of-state clients, and a deep commitment to trauma-informed therapy. We also emphasize skill-building, not just symptom relief—so clients leave with tools they can use long after treatment ends. With a focus on sustainable recovery, our program adapts to your life without compromising the quality of care.

Yes, one of the key benefits of an IOP is its flexibility. Participants can attend therapy while continuing to work, attend university, or fulfill family responsibilities. Evening and online IOP mental health options are available to help clients manage their schedules.
